The Ender 5 and Ender 5 Pro are a major design departure from the Ender 3, improving upon the former's bed flinger design by utilizing a rigid open frame that delivers more detailed prints. The lack of automatic bed leveling keeps the price low, and given the spotty performance of low-price automatic bed levelers, we think its a smart decision to stick with the manual process in this price range.
Although the printer is inexpensive, it required some major enclosure design features. First, the power supply and electronics are inside a case, which means if you just stick the printer in a box it will overheat. Instead, we custom designed an air scoop that brings in cold air to the power supply and electronics, where the air is heated up and then kept inside the enclosure. The power of the input and output fans are matched to keep a negative pressure while maintaining good temperatures for both PLA and ABS.
The placement of the display was a major problem being on the far right so it would be impractical to access through a door. Instead, it's mounted on the outside of the enclosure so it's easy to control the print without opening any doors.
It's easy to load up filament thanks to the swinging right-side door that's in exactly the right spot. The door not only makes it easy to load filament but leaves a slit to feed in filament from outside of the enclosure.
Advantages of adding a

enclosure:
Better quality prints because the ambient temperature is controlled
Keeps the power supply cool while the interior is hot enough for consistent prints with advanced material
More flexibility to print different types of filaments, including ABS
Optional fume filter or vent to the outside (both sold separately)
Thick 6mm acrylic doors and 3mm sides
The enclosure box/case/cover works by retaining the heat from the bed to bring the ambient temperature up high enough so that ABS and other filaments that expand when they cool are stabilized. If your main concern is the smell of melting plastic, it can be mitigated using an optional carbon filter. But if you are more interested in improving overall indoor air quality, a better solution is to vent to the outside via a hose. (not included). If you just want the highest possible enclosure temperature for ABS just put on the included air vent cover and it'll heat up as hot as possible.
Internal temperatures during printing with the fan turned on:
ABS is 36C to 38C.
PLA is 32C to 34C.
How it's Built
All of the plastic parts are 3D printed in ABS
to withstand the heat from the enclosure. The panels are cut on a US-made industrial laser and then flat packed for your assembly. All you need to put it together is a hex wrench and a small Phillips head screwdriver. (not included.)
